Foundations and Other Funding Sources:Upper Valley Community Foundation: a joint initiative of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Vermont Community Foundation. With total assets close to $20,000,000 (as of 12/31/99), UVCF has truly taken root in the Upper Valley, granting hundreds of thousands of dollars to many nonprofit organizations. The Allstate Foundation supports programs in personal safety-education programs with a youth emphasis. Annenberg Foundation supports child development; early childhood education; and education. AOL Time Warner Foundation supports four major initiatives: Equipping Kids for a Better Future; Extending Internet Benefits to All; Engaging Communities in the Arts; and Empowering Citizens and Civic Participation. The America the Beautiful Fund is a national nonprofit organization started in 1965 to encourage volunteer citizen efforts to protect the natural and historic beauty of America. Over 50,000 projects in all 50 states have been developed and assisted with ABF's help. In response to the events of September 11th, ABF is providing $1 million worth of flower, vegetable, and herb seeds to plant "Freedom Gardens" across America. Anyone who wants to sponsor or start a Freedom Garden in their community can receive a grant of 100 to 1,000 free seed packets. American Express supports projects in three primary areas: Community Service, Cultural Heritage and Economic Independence. Only those projects recommended by American Express employees and advisors will be made under the Community Service theme. Proposals related to the Cultural Heritage and Economic Independence themes are actively solicited. Funding priorities include funding grants in cities where there are large numbers of American Express employees and advisors and those that support the efforts of American Express employees and advisors who volunteer. American Honda Foundation: funds youth-oriented programs that provide support for job training and/or education in math, science and the environment. The program's stated mission is to encourage "innovative curriculum development for K-12 youth." Schools, school districts, and other education-related institutions are eligible to apply. Barnes & Noble provides funding to local and regional efforts to promote literacy and the arts in K-12 education. Beaumont Foundation of America The Beaumont Foundation of America grants Toshiba branded equipment to support digital inclusion for underserved individuals. The Foundation will grant $350 million over 5 years in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Best Buy Children's Foundation's mission is to enhance the quality of life of school-age children in communities where they maintain a presence (39 states). The Foundation invests in organizations and programs (not public or private K-12 schools) committed to making a difference in the lives of children with an emphasis on innovative programs that promote personal achievement, mentor relationships and life skills, and accentuate learning opportunities for school-age children. Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation makes awards "to advance the science of chemistry, chemical engineering and related sciences as a means of improving human relations and circumstances around the world." Captain Planet Foundation Schools and tax-exempt organizations are eligible for grants ranging from $250 - $2,500 to support hands-on environmental projects. The Clorox Company Foundation supports programs that serve youth, K-12 grade education, and cultural and civic organizations. The Foundation funds innovative approaches to systemic problems as well as general support for program operations.
The Coca-Cola Foundation has three focus areas for its philanthropic giving, one of which is support of innovative classroom teaching and learning in K-12 schools. The foundation looks favorably upon programs that are small and well targeted, i.e., those that help elementary and secondary students with a particular issue, such as civil rights or the environment. Funds also can be applied toward tuition for training that will result in new instructional techniques in the classroom. Public and private schools serving children of all ages may apply for these grants. The Charles A. Dana Foundation supports innovative programs leading to improved teaching in the performing arts in public schools. Computing EDGE is a free public service of KidSource Online that helps match needy schools with excess, unused or obsolete computer equipment that has been donated by individuals or organizations. The Corning Inc. Foundation, established in 1952, develops and administers projects in support of educational, cultural, and community organizations. The Corporation for National Service makes grants that will help support the Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day Initiative.
The Dirksen Congressional Center created the Michel Civic Education Grants to fund practical classroom strategies to improve the quality of teaching and learning about civics, with a particular emphasis on the role of Congress in the federal government. Areas of interest include designing lesson plans, creating student activities, and applying instructional technology in the classroom. Teachers (4th through 12th grades), community and junior college faculty and college and university faculty are eligible to apply as are teacher-led student teams and individuals who develop curriculum. The Dunn Foundation offers grants throughout the country to develop a national curriculum framework for environmental literacy using the visual environment as a base. The Dupont Foundation provides grants to help children, youth and families and to programs that focus on learning readiness, science and math education, workforce readiness and teacher preparation for K-12 kids. The Environmental Protection Agency invites applications for projects that disseminate or demonstrate environmental education practices or techniques such as programs that use environmental education as a means to reform education at the state or local level.
The Foundation for Child Development is a national private philanthropy dedicated to the principle that all families should have the social and material resources to raise their children to be healthy, educated, and productive members of their communities. The Foundation seeks to understand children, particularly the disadvantaged, and to promote their well being. The FundingFactory offers two ways that schools can earn leading edge technology, sports and recreation equipment (including playground equipment), or even cash by recycling empty printer cartridges and used cell phones. The Handspring Foundation focuses on supporting non-profit organizations or international equivalents that help at-risk children and youth. The Foundation makes cash grants from $1,000 to $25,000 for projects that focus on preK-12 education or other issues directly related to at-risk children and youth. The Hasbro Children's Foundation is committed to improving the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of children from birth through age twelve and their families through the support of innovative direct service programs in the areas of health, education, and social services. Edward W. Hazen Foundation seeks
to assist young people, particularly minorities and those disadvantaged
by poverty, in achieving their full potential as individuals and
as active participants in a democratic society. The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation makes mini-grants of $350 to school and public libraries for programs that encourage literacy and creativity in children. The Gateway Foundation, through Teach America, awards online training subscriptions to schools, school districts, and other educational institutions. Grant recipients will have unlimited access, for twelve months, to more than 250 online instructor-led courses or self-paced tutorials. Courses range from Web publishing and word processing to exploring the Internet.
The International Reading Association is a professional membership organization dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction, disseminating research and information about reading, and encouraging the lifetime reading habit. Their members include classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants, administrators, supervisors, university faculty, researchers, psychologists, librarians, media specialists, and parents. With members and affiliates in 99 countries, their network extends to more than 350,000 people worldwide. The Kmart Corporation corporate community and outreach program will focus on education programs and promote life-long learning. Kmart will also donate a minimum of $10 million to schools in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam in the 2001-2002 school year through its Kmart School Spirit Program. Kresge Foundation provides funds for nearly all facets of life to help promote the well-being of all mankind. Created in 1924, the foundation's focus is primarily national, but some international giving is available. Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation's primary philanthropic focus areas include community improvement projects, education scholarships for trade disciplines and environmental initiatives that enhance the natural environment. The Mathematics Education Trust (MET) of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) funds special projects that enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics. Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation: Melody program is designed to provide musical instruments and instrument repairs to existing K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing to purchase additional musical instruments and materials. If you are applying on behalf of more than one school, separate applications are required for each school. Special Projects Program targets community schools of the arts, after school programs and youth orchestras in need of assistance. The National Weather Foundation will award grants of $500 towards the improvement of education for K-12 students studying meteorology. Funds may be used for teachers to take an accredited course in atmospheric sciences, attend a relevant workshop or conference, or purchase scientific materials for their classrooms. Nellie Mae Foundation is focusing a few grant priorities in the New England area. Priorities include: college prep for low income, minority, immigrant and middle-school students. Minority high achievement and out of school time programs that are focused on academics. The MCI WorldCom Foundation provides states and school districts with on-site professional development for K-12 teacher trainers on how to incorporate Internet content into the classroom. The training sessions use print and online materials developed by the MarcoPolo Partnership - a consortium of leading educational organizations dedicated to creating high quality Internet Content for the classroom. The training sessions are led by professionally trained Internet education specialists, and all attendees receive copies of the MarcoPolo Teacher Training Kit. The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation is dedicated to helping young people with disabilities, through technology, to maximize their potential and fully participate in society. The Mockingbird Foundation (MFI) offers competitive grants to schools and nonprofit organizations in the area of music education for children. The Foundation is particularly interested in projects that encourage and foster creative expression in any musical form (including composition, instrumentation, vocalization, or improvisation), but also recognizes broader and more basic needs within conventional instruction. MFI encourages applications associated with diverse or unusual musical styles, genres, forms, and philosophies. Grants range in size from $50 to $5,000. National Geographic Society Education Foundation Teacher Grants. The mission of the National Geographic Society's Education Foundation is to prepare children to embrace a diverse world, succeed in a global economy, and steward the planet's resources. The NEA Foundation empowers public education employees to innovate, take risks, and become agents for change to improve teaching and learning in our society. The Oracle Corporation supports, the nonprofit Help Us Help Foundation assisting K-12 public schools and youth organizations in economically challenged communities to obtain information technology tools. Grants of computer equipment and software are available to schools and youth organizations that provide educational programs in low-income communities. The program will donate new Internet appliances and laser printers as well as all the ancillary equipment necessary to connect the devices, including network hubs, cables, and electrical surge protectors. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation encourages groups or individuals who wish to perform kind acts. The foundation announces the teacher's lesson plan contest in which grants are awarded to the teachers who submit the ten best Random Acts of Kindness lesson plans. RGK Foundation awards grants in the broad areas of Education, Community, and Medicine/Health. The Foundation's primary interests within Education include programs that focus on formal K-12 education (particularly mathematics, science and reading/literacy), after-school tutoring and enrichment, integrating technology into curriculum, teacher development, and higher education. The Foundation is particularly interested in programs that attract female and minority students into the fields of mathematics, science, and technology. Ronald McDonald House Charities supports global or national nonprofit organizations that help children read, provide nutritious after-school meals, offer life-changing surgeries, or help prevent life-threatening disease. Rohm and Haas Company accepts applications for grants in education, civic and community involvement, health and human services, and culture and arts. The Sonoco Foundation focuses on education, health, and welfare and supports institutions with a local, rather than a national/international perspective. Starr Foundation supports arts; education; healthcare; health organizations; human services; and social sciences. Surdna Foundation The Foundation's Arts Program is a national initiative that focuses on arts and education. Through their grants, they hope to contribute to the ability of young people to explore their own identity and their relationship to the world through high-impact, long-term experiences creating art with accomplished professional artists and deepen the ability of artists and arts organizations to contribute to the needs of young people and educators. The Teaching Tolerance Grants Program supports K-12 educators in developing and implementing anti-bias projects in classrooms, schools and communities. Grants of up to $2,000 are available for small scale, resourceful, student-focused projectsthat promote acceptance of diversity, peacemaking, community service or any other aspect of tolerance education. Community organizations and churches along with K-12 classroom teachers may apply for funding. The Web site provides examples of funded projects. The Toshiba America Foundation encourages programs with the potential to improve classroom teaching and learning of science, mathematics, and the science and mathematics of technology. Projects and proposals from individual or groups of classroom teachers in grades 7-12 will be considered for funding. The foundation is most interested in teacher-planned and -led projects that take place in the classroom. Grant proposals (under $5,000) are accepted throughout the year. Decisions about small grants are made monthly, except in March and September. Toyota TIME Grants: Grants of up to $10,000 each will be awarded to up to thirty-five K-12 classroom teachers of mathematics teaching in a public or private school within the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Territories. Grants are made possible by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and the Mathematics Education Trust. Proposals should demonstrate creativity and emphasize innovative ways of teaching mathematics or assessing student learning. The Verizon Foundation funds projects that focus on technology applications and programs in one or more of the following areas: literacy, the digital divide, economic and community development, women's issues, overcoming disabilities, and math and science education. Applications are accepted from January 1 through November 30 and must be submitted online. To help you write a fundable proposal, the foundation provides a list of suggestions and detailed grant guidelines in its web site. The Women's Sports Foundation has awarded nearly $1 million in grants and scholarships since 1996 to promote the involvement of women and girls in sports. The Tiger Woods Foundation focuses on awarding grants that create positive environments for underprivileged youths and emphasize the importance of parental involvement and responsibility in the lives of children. 501c(3) organizations with revenues over $100,000 are more likely to receive grants.
