Research Project Opportunities for K-12 Teachers

Synergy Innovations, Inc. (SII), Lebanon, is eligible to receive funding (up to $10,000) from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Research Experience for Teachers (RET) activities.

This research project may be of interest to physics, chemistry, general science or math teachers who want to learn more about the processes engineers use for creating breakthrough innovations. A stipend ($15-$20/hour) and classroom materials allowance (up to $1,000) would be available to the right candidate. Work on this project can be carried out at any point during the year between now and August 31, 2008.

The focus of this project is innovating a major improvement in a tool, called the Abrasive Slurry Jet (ASJ) cutter, to cut any material. It involves extensive wind-tunnel experimental modeling, some computed fluid dynamics, challenging materials engineering, and testing of prototypes in the Water Jet Laboratory at the University of Rhode Island. It also includes engineering for manufacture, chemical engineering to develop a unique liquid cutting fluid and management of the product-innovation process.

The goal of the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program is to enhance the professional development of K-12 teachers through active scientific research in order to bring new knowledge and technological innovation into their classrooms.
