Summer Externship Implementation Plan Guide
You've completed your Externship work experience. Now what?

The Externship experience is a great learning opportunity for educators. However, without a clearly defined plan to use what you have learned, the experience can lose its value quickly. Prepare an Implementation Plan to get the most out of your Externship. The plan should outline ways to connect your experience with your school, students and/or teaching strategies. To prepare your plan:

  • List each objective you outlined on the 'Externship Agreement.'
  • Briefly describe how your work experience relates to that objective.
  • Specifically outline how you accomplished or plan to accomplish that objective.
  • Include a list of applicable activities.
  • Attach any related lesson plans you prepare as a result of the externship.
  • State ways you plan to share your experience with your colleagues (i.e., faculty or department meetings), school administration and/or school board.

Use the following example as a guide:

Objective #1:

  • Bring career/resume Internet component to career education.

Plan:

  • As a part of the externship, I have located several sites for career information and resume building. My plan is to have students explore the career information sites, summarize the information given, and report to the class on their findings. The type of reporting will vary according to the audience. The students will also research several resume building sites and "build" their own resumes. A comparison of electronically produced resumes and traditionally produced resumes will be made examining pro's and con's of each.

Activities:

Students will prepare a formal report comparing resume building using electronic sources with standard methods of preparing resumes.

  • Given a list of Internet sites related to Resume Building, students will explore the sites and gather information about electronic resumes.
  • Given a list of print resources, students will examine the resources and gather information about standard resumes.
  • Students will then contrast and compare the styles, advantages, and disadvantages of both. Personal samples of two electronic styles and two standard styles must be included in the report.

At the completion of your Externship, keep one copy of the plan for yourself and submit one copy to Kathi Terami, Externship Facilitator.
