2008 Externship Opportunities

UVBEP is currently seeking project ideas from hosts and will add new projects to this list throughout the application period. Keep in mind that some of the best Externships are created from ideas suggested by educators and further developed in meeting with potential hosts. Our projects vary according to the Extern's skills, interests and goals. Although the Extern gains skills in many areas of video production, we tend to focus the projects on one area of production such as research, script writing, grant writing, archiving videos, or field production. Last year's Extern worked primarily with lighting, audio recording, and as cameraman, but spent a good deal of time doing internet research on future program topics. Research and writing skills are helpful. Previous experience in audio and video production is not necessary as long as the candidate is motivated and has an active curiosity. Design a drop-in and challenge program for retail staff about recycling at home and at work, or about saving energy at home and at work. Or, using principles and examples from The Natural Step for Business, outline a basic sustainability curriculum for staff to be used at Managers Meetings and/or at Supervisors Meetings.

Research the range of green products available on the market and their appropriateness for possible addition to our retail product line.

Science, health

Assist Director of Communications in developing a media kit. Based on strengths and interests, extern and host can design a one-to-two week externship to include one or more of the following projects: sort and archive digital and print photos and develop a system for future additions to the photo archive; assist with drafting copy for media kit; assist with design and layout of media kit materials. Organization, effective written communication skills, knowledge of Photoshop, an eye for graphic design and photography, research English, art, media literacy, photography
Assist Human Resources department in researching best practices from successful pre-school and child care programs offered by organizations. We are planning to open our own daycare and after-school center, and are looking for someone to help research and support the initial steps in the process.

Early childhood education, after school programming

Develop a fun, informative and engaging game for retail customers that will increase their awareness of simple ways to improve their nutrition and health. It could also include ideas for improving sustainability and recycling efforts as well. This game, potentially like bingo or a scavenger hunt, would be created for adults, families or for children. Customers successfully completing the game would be entered in a raffle.
