Job Shadow Day

Since 1999, over 5,400 local 8th grade students have visited over 300 Upper Valley workplaces on Job Shadow Day. Nationally, more than one million of America's youth were able to explore over 100,000 employers last year!

On March 25, 2009, the Upper Valley Business and Education Partnership will
coordinate Job Shadow experiences for students from:

  • Chelsea Public School
  • Claremont Middle School
  • Hartford Memorial Middle School
  • Hartland Elementary School
  • Indian River School
  • Lebanon Junior High School
  • Lyme School
  • Oxbow High School
  • Rivendell Academy
  • South Royalton School
  • Thetford Academy
  • Tunbridge Central School
  • additional schools are considering participation

Job shadowing enables youth to observe a workplace host as he or she goes
through a normal day on the job, providing an opportunity to see how skills
taught in the classroom are applied beyond school walls. Students can also
gain insight on careers they might pursue in the future.

Students will spend a half day at the worksite, arriving between 8:30 and
9:30am and departures begin around 1pm. (Actual times will depend on bus
routes yet to be determined). Some workplaces choose to provide a light
lunch for students (i.e., pizza or sandwiches) in the office break room or
cafeteria to round out the workday. UVBEP provides all necessary supporting
information, such as job shadow guidelines, evaluation forms and suggested
activities.
